Between the Lines

On Pause for Fall 2025

A writing group for caregivers who want to keep — or return to — their creative life.

This is a space for caregivers who are writing — even if it’s slowly, inconsistently, barely at all, or just coming back — and want their effort to be honored.

About Candace

I’m a writer, educator, and coach with over two decades of experience supporting writers in both community and higher education settings. Before transitioning to coaching and consulting full-time, I was a tenured associate professor of writing and rhetoric at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I taught professional writing, life writing, and writing history.

I know what it feels like to write in the margins of a caregiving life — in waiting rooms, in the quiet moments after everyone else is asleep, in your head while you’re doing something for someone else. I created this space because I longed for it myself: a space where showing up imperfectly still counted.

Over the years, I’ve mentored and worked with writers navigating caregiving in all its forms — and I’ve lived it too, caring for aging parents, young children, and a partner, often all at once. Writing has always been a lifeline, but the usual writing groups never quite fit. I also knew that learning to care for myself as a writer needed to be part of my writing.

This group is my answer to that gap. It’s a place for writers who are caregivers to show up gently, honestly, and in community — and still claim their creative life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this for?

Anyone who identifies as a caregiver and a writer. Whether you’re actively writing or just returning to it, this is a space for you.

What kind of writing is welcome?

All kinds — journaling, poetry, essays, books, blog posts — anything that matters to you.

Do I have to share about my caregiving experience?

Not at all. What you share is completely up to you. We’ll begin with brief introductions, but there’s no requirement to share beyond your comfort.

What happens during the guided sessions?

Each themed session begins with a short framing conversation led by me (Candace), where I share reflections and resources on writing and caregiving aligned with the week’s theme. This is followed by optional discussion and one hour of quiet writing time. The sessions are carefully designed, drawing on both research and lived experience, to support writers who are balancing full lives — with intention, flexibility, and care.

These are not lectures. They are invitations to reflect on what it means to care for yourself as a writer who is also a caregiver. The framing portion is recorded; participants and discussions are never recorded.

What are the open writing circles like?

We begin with a brief check-in, then write quietly together. You can work on anything you like. No sharing required. We’ll end with a writing prompt you can take with you.

Do I need to attend every session?

No. Come as you’re able. Life happens. You’ll still receive recordings and resources from the themed sessions even if you miss one.

Is this a therapy space? Are you a therapist?

No — but this is a space of care. I’m an educator and writer who’s worked with writers for over twenty years — and I’ve been a caregiver for most of my writing life.

My background is in writing studies and rhetoric, and I’ve mentored writers balancing caregiving and creativity. We’ll open the group with shared agreements around boundaries and consent. This is a space to write and support one another — not to fix, judge, or analyze.

Why a writing group for caregivers?

Because writing while caregiving is hard — and most writing spaces don’t recognize that. This group offers a place where you can bring your full caregiving life and still be seen as a writer.

Is there a payment plan or scholarship?

Yes. The full rate is $235, and the community rate is $175. Payment plans and scholarships are available — just reach out. If you’d like to help others join, you can contribute to the scholarship fund.
