I am a writer, educator, and coach with over two decades of experience supporting writers in both community and higher education settings. As a former tenured associate professor of writing and rhetoric, I’ve spent my career developing courses, co-facilitating writing groups and workshops, and mentoring writers—particularly those balancing caregiving responsibilities.
My own journey as a writer and coach has been shaped by my experiences within writing communities, and by my role as a caregiver to my parents, children, and partner, each with their unique needs. Balancing writing alongside caregiving, long commutes, and navigating the challenges of being a Black woman in higher education has deepened my belief in the importance of sustainable writing routines — ones that adapt to shifting life circumstances.
My coaching style is rooted in active listening, thoughtful questioning, and creating space for reflection — often through writing. I believe coaching can help you discern and live out your values and commitments, even in the midst of chaos.
Before transitioning to coaching and consulting full-time, I was a tenured associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I taught professional writing, life writing, and writing history. My work focuses on cultural rhetorics, literacy, and writing studies, with an emphasis on how communities teach, practice, and understand citizenship, both locally and globally. My first book, Resisting Brown: Race, Literacy, and Citizenship in the Heart of Virginia, explores a literacy program designed to foster global citizenship during the American Civil Rights Movement. The book earned the 2019 Coalition for Community Writing Book Award.
More recently, my writing has examined citizenship through the lens of music, fandom, popular culture, and transcultural exchange. My CV, which includes a detailed list of my academic work, professional experience, and publications, can be accessed here.
As an independent scholar, I continue to pursue research and writing. Driven by curiosity and a love of learning, my writing has taken me from archives and kitchen tables to stadiums, and I am eager to see where it leads next.
