What’s Your Writing Wish for the Summer?

1–2 minutes

Are you wishing for more time to write?

Are you wishing for a break from writing?

Are you hoping for a creative spark to revive a long-held project?

Or maybe you’re longing for accountability…

A fresh start?

A chance to just write?

For many of us, summer arrives with some kind of writing wish—sometimes spoken aloud, sometimes held quietly.

In past summers, I’ve wished for rest: a break from writing after long stretches of caregiving. Summer writing often felt impossible with children out of school, shifting responsibilities for aging parents, and little space for myself. Other times, I wished for someone to ask about my writing, not out of pressure or institutional deadlines, but out of genuine care and encouragement.

This year, I find myself with several unfinished projects—and a wish:

To slow down just enough to decide what’s still calling me. I need to discern which project requires my attention right now. To be honest about what I have capacity for—as a writer, a caregiver, and a person still healing from burnout.

I know summer looks different for all of us. The pace. The responsibilities. The hopes.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to writing this season.

Maybe this summer is for diving in.

Maybe it’s for pausing.

Maybe it’s for remembering why you write at all.

Whatever it is, I hope you’ll give yourself a moment to notice what you genuinely need.

If you’d like a gentle space to reflect before committing to your summer writing, I’m offering a no-cost five-day experience called Reflect & Reconnect. We begin Monday, May 19 (and again June 16). Each day, I’ll send a short writing prompt or arts-inspired prompt to your inbox. This series is designed to help you reflect carefully and consider what a sustainable and meaningful summer of writing might look like for you. No materials or art experience are required. It’s self-paced and the writing is just for you.

If you’d like to join, just email me and let me know if you prefer the May 19 or June 16 start date.

Here’s to honoring your writing wish, whatever it may be.
